UV-filters in cosmetic products – COSSMA
März 1, 2024Interview with Lignovations in Cosmetics Design Europe
März 21, 2024[VIENNA, Austria, March 6, 2024] – Lignovations, an innovative startup specializing in sustainable lignin-based ingredients, announced that its LignoGuard® SPF Booster has won the Cosmetics & Toiletries Allē Awards in the Base Ingredients category at Beauty Accelerate 2024 in Los Angeles, USA.
The Cosmetics & Toiletries (C&T) Allē Awards, presented by C&T and their parent company Allured Business Media, are renowned for spotlighting the ingenuity and creativity within cosmetics and personal care R&D. They recognized LignoGuard® for its sustainability, efficacy, and innovation. The award, presented at an exclusive Awards Dinner attended by the company on March 6, 2024, celebrates LignoGuard®’s role as a versatile multifunctional offering an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic ingredients in the beauty sector.
LignoGuard® is an upcycled natural ingredient derived from lignin, a component found in plants that was for many years regarded as a „by-product“ by the pulp and paper industry. It addresses critical industry challenges by providing up to a 50% SPF boost (in-vivo), antioxidant protection, and formulation stability, making it a game-changer in sun care and beyond. It also enables formulators to create more appealing sun care products with mineral UV filters by eliminating white cast.
The jury commended LignoGuard® for its innovative, sustainable approach that effectively boosts SPF: “The innovation is great – formulators are always looking for ways to pass and boost SPF values without increasing sunscreen filter usage; to decrease white cast; and to create a uniform film upon application. This material does check off a lot of the current needs: sustainable, made from upcycled starting materials and natural. Nice to see a natural approach and clever way to synergize SPF filters.”
“We are grateful to the Allē Awards panel of judges for the recognition and this exciting moment for Lignovations,” said Victor Tibo, Head of Business Development at Lignovations. “Our goal with LignoGuard® is to bring the natural protective functions of Lignin into everyday products such as cosmetics. Through years of research at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) we finally unlocked Lignin’s power for skin care and its effectiveness has been proven by multiple independent studies.“
